NY Times Article Notes Revival Of Tugboat Industry |
Monday, 25 June 2007 17:06 |
An article which appeared in the New York Times on Thursday notes a revival in the tugboat industry. The article features interviews with tugboat builders from the Great Lakes Towing Company, founded by John D. Rockerfeller in 1899, as well as the Foss Maritme Company, founded in 1889.
The article attributes the rise in the number of new tugboat orders to the Oil Pollution Act, which requires vessels carrying petroleum products to be double-hulled by 2015. The additioanl weight of the vessels requires more powerful tugboats than are currently available. OSG America, a shipping company featured in the story, is planning a fleet of ocean-going 12,000-hp tugs.
