Union Clericals May Strike At Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach PDF Print E-mail

The International Long-Shore and Warehouse Union representatives have given notice that their membership will honor the picket lines at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, should the clerical workers in those locations go on strike. The clerical workers' union notified all parties on Monday that it has submitted its 'last, best and final'offer. The strike deadline passed on Monday, but negotiations have not yet broken down. The ports were affected by a 10-day strike in 2002, which crippled the movement of goods around the country.
 
WA State Contracts For Winter Rescue Tug Service For Neah Bay PDF Print E-mail

The Washington State Department of Ecology announced that it has offered a contract to Crowley Maritime Corp. to provide extended winter tug service in Neah Bay. The area has had rescue tug service since 1999. In that time, 34 ships have received assistance from the tug. Winter assistance is often needed by ships carrying oil through the Strait of Juan de Fuca to avoid rocks and other hazards. Crowley will station a tug in Neah Bay from October 1 to mid-March 2008 at a cost of $8,750 per day with the State of Washington picking up the tab.
