The Army has identified a Fort Eustis soldier who was believed to have fallen over the side of a tugboat Sunday during training off the coast of North Carolina. Spc. Samuel Valdez, 22, was a watercraft operator with the 73rd Transportation Company, 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, according to a news release from the Army. He was from Plant City, Fla. Valdez was in licensure training aboard the Army vessel Major General Winfield Scott about 15 miles off Drum Inlet when he fell overboard, the release and the Coast Guard said. The Coast Guard joined in the Army search for Valdez on Sunday morning, and the search was suspended late Monday. The crew of the tugboat was on its way to Charleston, S.C., for training in piracy with the Navy’s Bataan Expeditionary Group, the release says. The tug returned to Fort Eustis this morning. The status of Valdez will remain “duty status whereabouts unknown” until an Army investigation is completed, his remains are found or 10 days pass, the release says.
