I just did the preliminary registration for my TWIC, I sure am happy that the company I currently work for is paying for this. I thought the TWIC was for the Department of Homeland Security and works in conjunction with the US Coast Guard, oh how wrong I was this registration was done under the National Security Agency, so it is official we now have the goverment going well and beyond the redundentency of a program that is sure to fail. Please do not get me wrong I am for a safer non terrorist attack world but this is a program that was doomed from the start. Continued... Every person that holds and MMD is to have one of these TWIC card by WHEN!!! The goverment has no set plan that when everyone does have one of these what to do next. I am not talking about the major or even the minor ports on our coasts, these ports are allready guarded like Fort Knox, with x-ray machines, cameras and the newly overstaffed security personal. I think you would have an easier time robbing a bank then trying to get into one of these places. I am talking about the small minute ports that have no security like the fishing docks and marinas that line our coasts with little to no security, I guess there are no threats there and therefore everyone that is required to carry a TWIC will never be checked. Even if they could be checked how would they know who to check. While on my off time last week I was enjoying a sunny afternoon at a local establishment and observed the many boats of all sizes coming and going picking up and dropping off people from all destinations offshore and inshore there wasn't even a hint of 'National Security', unless the guy playing acoustic guitar was undercover, he did look funny to me. Just the week before my parents who live in the Keys called me just after they were taking the dog for a walk when fifteen Cubans that landed the night before came out on the road looking for water and medical attention for one person. They called local athourities and they of course showed up imediatley, how long did it take Homeland Security to show up about one and a half hours. My recent dealings with the Coast Guard required me to just about give them everything possible to prove I was myself with the exception of a DNA sample, don't laugh that will be next. The US goverment has all the goods on me but now the NSA needs to get in the game. I think in the name of National Security they should have thought this thru, before implication. They are still trying to figure how and wich device to use to scan the TWIC's and when they do get these who will be the authorized person to scan the cards, I can not imagine the background check there going to get, they might need to give a DNA sample. I truly hope this all works out but I would rather see all this money go to something that is our own National Security, lower fuel costs, finishing up Iraq and bringing our troops home. I don't have the answers but I do not feel safer with my Transportation Worker Identification Card in my hand.
