A company contracted by the Federal government to dismantle two ships at the Sparrows Point shipyard in Maryland has disappeared, leaving a subcontractor unpaid to the tune of $750,000 and two unrecycled ships. North American Ship Recycling was contracted to break down two ships - the Sphinx and the Hoist. Instead, the ships are still in rotting in port and pose an environmental threat to the region. NASR has apparently sold the Hoist to a shadow corporation linked to NASR, in violation of its agreement with MarAd. The ships are part of the James River Fleet, which MarAd is under pressure to dispose of.
